After selling our desktop HVAC software technology to Autodesk in 2009, we at Carmel Software decided to focus on developing mobile HVAC software. When we started with the HVAC Duct Sizer iPhone app back in 2009, there were only 10 HVAC apps on iTunes. Fast forward 5+ years and there are now 1000s of mobile HVAC apps for sale including HVAC calculators, thermostat controllers, HVAC reference and marketing apps.
Over the past 6 years, we have developed 35+ different apps for iOS and Android, and in the process have licensed 160,000 apps worldwide. Our apps focus on HVAC and building technologies including load calcs, duct sizing, psychrometrics, building energy audits, pipe sizing, and equipment maintenance.
While 160,000 licenses does not necessarily mean 160,000 individual users, it definitely represents many tens of thousands of users worldwide.
"Mobile application sales represent a type of business model that has never existed before: One that allows small companies to reach very large numbers of customers in a short period of time at a low cost, " says Stephen Roth, Principal at Carmel Software.
